March's Birthstone is Aquamarine

The name aquamarine was derived by the Romans, "aqua" meaning water and "mare" meaning sea, because it looked like sea water. They were considered sacred to Neptune, god of the sea. This association with and safe voyages as well as protection against perils and monsters of the sea. Its first documented use was by the Greeks between 480-300 BC. They wore aquamarine amulets engraved with the god Poseidon on a chariot.

The aquamarine was believed to possess medicinal and healing powers, curing ailments of the stomach, liver, jaws and throat. During the Middle Ages, it was believed to be an effective antidote against poison. Aquamarines were thought to be the source of power for soothsayers, who called it the "magic mirror", and used it for telling fortunes and answering questions about the future. It is said that Emperor Nero used it as an eyeglass 2,000 years ago, and much later, aquamarines were used as glasses in Germany to correct shortsightedness. In fact, the German name for eyeglasses today is "brille", derived from the mineral beryl.

February birthstone is Amethyst

The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek and means "not drunken." It is also the Zodiac stone for the constellation of Pisces.

Amethyst as a healing stone contains sobering and calming qualities which allow this stone to be commonly associated with peace.

Amethyst has identified as a crystal that functions favorably in clearing certain types of blockage and in aligning the Chakras.
It is related to and found to heal and align ailments of the the 6th and 7th Chakras, which are the Third Eye or Brow (6th) and the Crown (7th).

Power Stone
It is used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.

Protection Stone
Ancient Egyptians used the amethyst guard against guilty and fearful feelings. It has been worn as protection from self-deception, as well as a protection against witchcraft. The amethyst has long been used to open the spiritual and psychic centers, making it one of the power stones. It is also used as a meditation aid when worn as a necklace.

Healing properties of Amethyst
Amethyst is a gemstone often worn by healers, as it has the power to focus energy. A healer will usually wear several pieces of jewelry with amethysts set in silver, especially an amethyst necklace. The person to be healed will have an Amethyst to hold while the healing is being done. The healer will place another piece of Amethyst on the area of the body in need of healing, the heart or lungs usually.
Amethyst is used for problems in the blood and in breathing problems. Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.
Amethyst clusters, points or several tumbled Amethysts placed in a window that receives sun most of the day are very beneficial to use in healing and to heal negativity in the home. The Power of Gemstones - January birthstone is Garnet

The Garnet's emotional, physical and mental healing is associated with purification, regeneration and warmth. As a healer and protector from toxins, a garnet can be used as a remedy in the body's fight against food poisoning and blood toxicity.

With respect to the Chakras, garnet is associated with the (2nd) Centre and the Base/Root/Spine (1st) Centre. Garnet not only clears the blockage of negative energy from these areas, it also is used in the healing and enhancing of the activities that occur within and via the centre.

Brazilian Gemstones & Custom Heirloom Jewelry

I am really pleased to have a new supplier of precious gem stones here in Bali. This valuable contact , Rafael, is bringing the stones in directly from the mines in the Northeast of his native country Brazil. The beautiful stones on offer consist of emeralds, diamonds, paraiba tourmalines, aquamarines, citrines, amethysts and crysoberyl's to name a few. There are also many more on offer.

Rafael also has beautiful black/green/grey A grade quality 8-9mm Tahitian pearls which he acquired on a working holiday there.

All these stones and pearls are of excellent quality at amazingly affordable prices!

Custom Heirloom Jewelry

In November I returned to Bali from a quick business trip to Jakarta where I met with certain Ambassadors wives to discuss custom jewelry work and also some maintenance on precious family heirloom pieces. We spent quite some time designing custom rings featuring emeralds and diamonds which were supplied by my new Brazilian contact Rafael. The ladies absolutely loved the gems and I am planning a return visit early in the New Year as the stones were so well received the ladies are already planning to have me design more custom pieces for them.

BWA Bazaar

While in Jakarta I also attended the BWA Bazaar. My collections were a sell out with the most popular items being from the Root, Kupu Kupu (Butterfly) and Carved Lotus Collections. Charms, always popular, were a big seller too.

The Golden Buddha... Condom (!)

from the island of the gods to the city of angels

Looking at the string bean thin sky scraper tall palms that line the streets of the city of angels, we understand how Dr. Seuss may have been inspired.

There were several highlights to my trip last month to the City of Angels and one of them was the 'artwalk' through Chinatown. The first saturday of every month the city's art galleries stay open late and its legal to walk around carrying alcoholic beverages! There was a lot of provocative art on display but one show really stood out for me. 'World Condom Project I : Natural Feelings' by Uudam Nguyen at Sabina Lee Gallery showcased larger than life sized condoms with flags painted on them. This show pushes the fine border between love and war, identity and power. The suspended ring of penises is like a crown or halo daring anyone to stand in the center and feel the endless / mindlessness of ego's and partriotism at its extreme. What really stopped me in my tracks was the 'little' condom with a golden Buddha painted on it... I had to question that... which lead to a theosophical conversation with Sabina Lee on why she was a catholic; she said Catholicism and Buddhism were the same and I should re-read the bible. I can't say I agree. Amen.
