WHY INDEPENDENT DESIGNERS?
As a young girl, I aspired for branded bags and heels and everything according to the glossy magazine definition of what was cool. My concept of luxury changed, however, once I began toting such objects – and feeling like a walking signboard when logos were obvious. Its the same realisation that most fashionistas are having or have already had around the World. The idea that we need to come back to quality and exclusivity, for any personal meaning in the act of wearing fashion.
I use to travel a lot and pick up little things here and there. Chunky kitten heels from Tokyo, raw silk tops from deserted boutiques in Bangkok, handcrafted bangles from an overly anxious designer+salesman in Hong Kong. I liked the fact that these things were hard to get, no one else had them, and the designer had invested so much of his/herself into the whole process making their dreams come to life. Buying one scarf was a big deal to them. Because they ‘are’ their work. Buying their work is like buying a piece of art; you’re endorsing their who they are and their unique vision. Its this ‘specialness’ that drew me into collecting fashion from Independent Designers, and eventually figuring out a way to represent and distribute their work.
